The Cranston Historical Society invites you to a presentation about the History of Firefighting in Cranston by author/historian James Ignasher at the historic Sprague Mansion Museum. Governor Sprague Mansion Museum, 1353 Cranston St, Grand Ballroom Entrance. Today we take it for granted that in the event of a fire, summoning help is just a phone call away, but such was not always the case. Organized fire protection in Cranston is a relatively modern convenience, for the city’s first fire company wasn’t established until the 1890s – and with obsolete equipment! From bucket brigades, to volunteer companies, to a full-time paid fire department, Cranston’s firefighting history is varied and colorful. Why did it take nearly 140 years after Cranston’s incorporation to establish the first volunteer fire company? Why was the police department’s only patrol wagon turned over to the Arlington Fire Company in 1911? When did the city establish a paid fire department? If you want to know the answers to these questions, join us on April 22, at 7:00 p.m. author and historian Jim Ignasher will give a talk on the history of firefighting in Cranston. Accessible access & parking in back of Mansion. Free event. Mr. Ignasher is retired police officer and a RI author/historian who also researches forgotten tales. Some of his books include: RI Disasters: Tales of Tragedy by Air, Sea and Rail; Remembering Smithfield: Sketches of Apple Valley; The Corpse That Drove a Hearse and Other True Tales of the Macabre.
